Solana Beach, CA —A banquet with silent auction for AKERFA is being prepared for September 10, 2011, at the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club. 1505 Lomas Sante Fe Drive, in Solana Beach.
“Over 8,000 bicycles have been built for villagers of Zambia,” says Vaughn Spethman, Co-Founder of AKERFA, the fundraising arm of Zambikes, a four year- old bike assembly/ facility established in the heart of Zambia, Africa. (AKERFA is Africa spelled backwards using a “K” vs. a “C”)
In a country where 50-80% are unemployed, Zambikes employs 40 Zambian team members, training them in management, bike assembly, fabrication and construction.
“People’s lives have been changed for the better,” says Vaughn. Bicycles are the main mode of transportation in Zambia, transporting people and goods throughout the state. Since the inception of Zambikes, villagers have built over 8,000 bicycles— improving their lives and economic foundation, In addition, Zambians have created Zambulances, a specialized cart that attaches to the bicycle to transport the sick or injured.
